5 Hitting Drills Every Serious Young Hitter Should Master
Good hitting is repeatable. That means your mechanics aren’t just something you do well, they’re something you do the same way every time, especially when it’s loud and the count is 0-2. These five drills are the ones we build our sessions around, because they isolate the pieces that make swings consistent under pressure.
1. Tee Work: Not the Way You Think
Most players hit off a tee with zero intention. They put it on the tee, they swing, they watch the ball. That’s not training. That’s batting practice. Real tee work means setting up your location (inside, outside, middle-in), deciding your contact point before the swing, and focusing on one mechanical element per round. Fifteen focused reps beat two hundred mindless ones every time.
2. Soft Toss: Timing Meets Mechanics
Soft toss is where you connect your mechanics to actual timing. We like side-angle soft toss to train the hip load and hand path together, which forces a player to commit to their load before the ball gets to the zone. Players who skip this drill usually have mechanics that look great on a tee and fall apart on live pitching.
3. One-Hand Drills (Top and Bottom)
Bottom-hand isolation trains the load, the path, and the extension. Top-hand isolation trains the snap and the release through the zone. Used together, one-hand drills are the fastest way to fix barrel control issues and help players feel what each hand should be doing. Don’t skip these because they look simple. They’re not.
4. Front Toss with a Competitive Goal
Front toss becomes a mental drill when you add stakes. We track exit velocity, location, or line drives vs. ground balls. Setting a target before each round, and tracking it, teaches players to compete in practice, not just swing. Athletes who add competitive goals to drill work handle game pressure significantly better than those who don’t.
5. Reset Reps
This is the drill most programs never run. Reset reps means deliberately missing, or getting “out,” and then practicing your reset routine before the next pitch. Step out. Breathe. Cue word. Step back in. This is Heads Up Baseball in practice form. Players who drill this have seen it when the moment actually comes. Players who haven’t are practicing for the first time in the game.
The Real Secret: Intention
These five drills aren’t magic. Plenty of players run through all of them and don’t improve. The difference is intention. Every rep should have a purpose. Every round should target something specific. Practice with your head up. That’s the whole thing.
