This Week at 8th Day: Slower, Fewer, Better

Seven days of posts, and one idea kept showing up that we never planned: the work gets better when it gets slower and smaller. Here is what carried across the week.

  • Monday, hitting. Stop trying to lift the ball. Hit it hard first, angle second. Exit velo is the skill. Launch angle is the byproduct of a good path and a good decision.
  • Tuesday, coaching. “Do it again. Slower.” Speed hides sloppy. Cut the tempo in half and the bad rep has nowhere to hide. Slow is not soft. Slow is honest.
  • Wednesday, the lesson. Your hitter does not have a swing problem, he has a four voices problem. Travel coach, school coach, dad, a video. All partly right, and together they built a kid thinking about four things and doing none of them well. One voice, one fix, then we test it.
  • Wednesday, faith. Psalm 101:2-3, integrity of heart within my house. Character is what is already there when nobody is grading it.
  • Thursday, mindset. You can call a player’s whole practice from the first ten minutes, and it is not the swings. It is the warmup. A standard is not a mood.
  • Thursday and Friday, gear. Psalm 102:26, they will all wear out like a garment. Buy the one piece he will actually wear and print it right. Fall mornings turned cold and half the sideline is still in a t-shirt.
  • Saturday, a player. One of our guys cut his session from 150 swings to 60, with a rule that the round stops when the quality drops. Three weeks later his hard-hit count in live BP went from 4 out of 10 to 7 out of 10. Same kid, same plan, fewer reps.
  • Sunday, the long view. Week six is where most people quietly quit. “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9. In due season. The timing is not yours.

Volume feels like effort. Quality is what actually changes. If you want that built around your player instead of around a template, start at our training programs. If your sideline is freezing, start a team order.
