The first two minutes after a game either build your player up or quietly tear him down. Most parents don’t get it wrong because they don’t care, they get it wrong because nobody ever gave them the words.

 

The Drive Home Rule is simple: ask before you tell, and talk about character before you talk about performance.

 

This isn’t a script to read word-for-word like a robot. It’s a starting point, so you’re not improvising in the moment when your player is watching your face for a cue on how to feel about what just happened.
