What Is the Heads Up Baseball Method and Why It Works
Picture a kid who hits .400 in practice and .180 in games. Same swing. Same mechanics. Completely different results. The coach sees a mechanics problem. The Heads Up Baseball method sees the real issue: the mental game isn’t there yet.
What Is Heads Up Baseball?
Heads Up Baseball is a mental performance framework developed by sports psychologists Ken Ravizza and Tom Hanson. It’s used at every level of the game, from high school programs to professional organizations, because it works. The core idea is simple: you can’t control the outcome of an at-bat, but you can control your process. Your mindset. Your routine. Your ability to reset after failure.
At 8th Day Baseball, this is the foundation of everything we do. We don’t just teach players how to swing. We teach them how to think.
The Three Pillars We Focus On
1. Awareness
Most young athletes don’t realize when they’ve lost focus until after the strikeout. Heads Up Baseball teaches players to notice what’s happening in their head in real time, and to do something about it before the pitch is thrown. Breathing techniques, pre-pitch routines, and cue words are the tools. Awareness is the skill.
2. Release and Reset
Baseball is a failure sport. The best hitters in history fail 70% of the time. The ability to step out of the box, release the last pitch, and reset to compete the next one is what separates good players from great ones. We train this deliberately, not as an afterthought, but as a core skill.
3. Trust
Players who over-think at the plate hit worse than players who trust their training. Building trust means reps in practice that mirror the pressure of games. It means developing routines that become automatic. And for our players, it means building on a foundation of faith, knowing that something bigger than the scoreboard is at stake, which helps athletes compete with freedom rather than fear.
Why It Matters for Young Players
Youth baseball is overloaded with mechanical instruction. Launch angle. Hip rotation. Hand path. These things matter, but they’re wasted on an athlete who panics in big moments. The mental game isn’t a bonus. It’s the multiplier. Mechanics get you to the plate. The mental game determines what happens there.
That’s why we build the mental game first and mechanics second. Not because mechanics don’t matter. They do. But because a player who competes with confidence and clarity will always outperform one who knows the drills but freezes under pressure.
How We Apply It at 8th Day
In every session, private or group, we integrate mental performance alongside physical reps. Players learn their own reset routine before they learn their swing adjustment. They practice competing under simulated pressure before we fine-tune their mechanics. And they do it all within a faith-driven environment that reinforces one message: you are more than your batting average.
If your athlete is physically talented but mentally inconsistent, the Heads Up Baseball method is the missing piece. We’d love to show you how it works.
