This Week at 8th Day: Pass It Down, Pick Him Up
Every day this week we paired a Psalm with a piece of the game. The Psalms ran 78, 81, and 82, and all three landed on the same idea: almost none of this is about you.
Monday, Psalm 78:4. “We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD.” Monday reset. This game gets handed down. Somebody taught you how to hold a bat. On the 8th Day, you start over, and you hand it to the next kid.
Thursday, Psalm 81:6. “I relieved your shoulder of the burden.” Gear day. A uniform a kid is proud to put on takes weight off him before the first pitch is ever thrown.
Friday, Psalm 82:3. “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless.” The dugout is a quiet court. When your teammate boots one, you go get him. Nobody should have to tell you.
The baseball ran the same direction all week:
- Preparation means ready on pitch one, not settling in over a few at-bats.
- The invisible season is the real one. Nobody claps for the reps that build it.
- Your bat gets you noticed. Your glove keeps you on the field.
- The best player on the team is not your competition. Last month’s version of you is.
Honest note on the week: X carried most of it. Instagram and Facebook went down on the daily posts Thursday and Friday, and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday were quiet. Five real days, not seven.
Every one of those lines is about somebody else. Somebody else’s weight, somebody else’s bad hop, somebody else’s turn to learn the thing you already know. That is the week. Pass it down, pick him up.
If you want to train the whole player, that is what we do on the field. If your team needs gear before its next tournament, we print it.
