Hand Speed Wins Battles: Why Extension Matters More Than You Think

Hand speed is where hitting separates the good from the great. Not just the speed of your hands at contact—but the speed they’re still moving after the ball leaves the barrel. That finish is everything.

Most hitters slow down at contact. Their hands take the long way home, the back shoulder rolls early, and they lose the momentum they built. That’s a shorter, softer swing. That’s leaving barrels on the table.

Coach Trev’s Focus

The hand-speed window is tight: it starts in your load and it ends at full extension. If your hands decelerate before you even reach the ball, you’re done. If they’re still accelerating through contact and into the finish, you’re a different hitter.

The mistake most players make is thinking about speed early—the “load phase” speed. That matters, sure. But the real money is in sustained acceleration. Your hands should be at peak velocity through the zone, not before it. The finish isn’t a byproduct of the swing; it’s proof the swing worked.

The Drill: The Knob-Extension Finish

Here’s what we do at 8th Day Baseball to build real hand speed and extension:

  • Set up at a tee, hands at your normal ready position.
  • Focus on two cues: “Knob short, barrel long.” Your back hand stays compact (knob toward the pitcher), but your front arm extends through the ball. No rolling, no wrapping—clean extension.
  • Take 10 reps focusing ONLY on the finish: hands still accelerating, shoulders level, back shoulder rolling up and through (not down). Record it or feel the difference in three swings.
  • Move to live BP or a pitch machine at 50-60 mph. Same two cues. Take 20 swings. You’ll feel when your hands are truly driving vs. when they’re coasting.
  • Retest yourself: go back to the tee, take three “finish” swings, then three live pitches. The extension should feel identical—that’s consistency.

Why This Works

Hand speed wins because it creates backspin on the baseball. Backspin = carry. Carry = extra bases. It also happens to be the fastest way through the zone, which means you can hit more pitches and adjust late. Your hands are still working when off-speed comes in the zone.

This isn’t about strength or size. It’s about sequencing: load your barrel behind you, get your front side quiet, and then fire your hands through. The finish proves your hands won the race.

A Quick Word on Faith

Baseball demands discipline and honesty. You can’t fake hand speed in live BP, and you can’t fake it in life. Show up every day, do the work that feels hard because it’s new, and measure the truth. The Eighth Day is all about new beginnings—it’s the day you start being different than you were yesterday. Hand speed is built one rep at a time. That’s the work.
